Your safari begins early in the morning when your Woodland Trek & Safaris driver guide collects you from your hotel or agreed pickup point in Arusha. After a short briefing, you begin the scenic drive towards Tarangire National Park.

The journey normally takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours and covers around 120 to 140 kilometres. Along the way, you will pass through northern Tanzania’s rural landscapes, small settlements, farmland, and areas used by pastoral communities.

Upon arrival at the park entrance, your guide will complete the registration procedures before beginning the game drive.

The morning game drive takes you through areas dominated by acacia woodland, open grassland, and impressive baobab trees. Tarangire is particularly famous for its elephants, which may be seen moving in family groups, feeding beneath trees, or gathering near water.

As you continue deeper into the park, your guide will search for giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs, and predators such as lions. Leopards and cheetahs are also present, although sightings are less predictable.

A major focus of the safari is the Tarangire River, which serves as an important water source for wildlife, particularly during the drier months. Animals frequently gather around the river, creating excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.

Around midday, you will stop at a designated picnic area for lunch. This provides time to rest and enjoy the surrounding landscape before continuing your afternoon game drive.

The afternoon offers further opportunities to explore different habitats and search for wildlife you may not have encountered earlier. Bird enthusiasts can also enjoy Tarangire’s impressive bird diversity, with hundreds of species recorded within the park.

Later in the afternoon, you will begin your journey back to Arusha, arriving at your hotel or agreed drop off point in the evening.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park can be visited throughout the year, although each season offers a different experience.

The dry season from approximately June to October is particularly famous for large wildlife concentrations around the Tarangire River. Elephant herds can be especially impressive during this period.

The greener months transform the park into a lush landscape with beautiful scenery, young animals, and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

For a one day safari, an early morning departure from Arusha is recommended so that you can maximise your wildlife viewing time inside the park.
