Arusha to Materuni Village and Materuni Waterfalls

Your adventure begins in the morning when your Woodland Trek & Safaris driver guide collects you from your hotel or agreed meeting point. After a short briefing, you begin the scenic journey towards Moshi and the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The drive from Arusha to Materuni Village is approximately 100 to 120 kilometres and normally takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic, weather, and road conditions. Along the way, you may enjoy views of rural settlements, agricultural landscapes, and, when the skies are clear, spectacular glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the surrounding countryside.

Upon arrival at Materuni Village, you will meet your local guide and begin the walk towards Materuni Waterfalls. The hike normally takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes each way, depending on your pace and the condition of the trail.

The Materuni landscape is characterised by fertile volcanic soils, coffee plantations, banana farms, tropical vegetation, streams, and traditional Chagga homesteads. Walking through this peaceful environment offers a completely different perspective of life around Mount Kilimanjaro.

As you approach the waterfall, the sound of rushing water becomes increasingly powerful until the impressive Materuni Waterfall comes into view. Cascading approximately 70 metres down a steep rock face, the waterfall creates one of the most picturesque natural settings in the Kilimanjaro region.

You will have time to admire the waterfall, take photographs, relax beside the valley, and enjoy the cool mountain atmosphere. Swimming may sometimes be possible depending on water conditions and guidance from your local guide, although the water is usually very cold.

After enjoying the waterfall, you will hike back towards the village for another highlight of the experience, a traditional Chagga coffee tour.

During the coffee experience, local hosts will explain the journey of coffee from plant to cup. You may participate in roasting and grinding the beans while learning about the importance of coffee farming to families living around Mount Kilimanjaro.

The experience often concludes with a freshly prepared cup of locally grown coffee and a traditional Tanzanian or Chagga style lunch, depending on your selected package.

Later in the afternoon, you will begin the return journey to Arusha. Sit back and enjoy the changing scenery as you travel through the Kilimanjaro region before arriving at your hotel or agreed drop off point in the early evening.

Best Time to Visit Materuni Waterfalls

The Materuni Waterfalls tour can be enjoyed throughout most of the year. The surrounding Kilimanjaro foothills remain naturally green because of the region’s altitude, fertile volcanic soils, and rainfall.

The drier periods generally provide more comfortable hiking conditions, while the wetter months can make the waterfall particularly powerful and the surrounding vegetation even greener.

Travellers visiting during rainy periods should expect sections of the trail to become muddy and slippery. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are therefore highly recommended.
