Your adventure begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the principal international gateway to northern Tanzania. After a warm welcome from our professional safari representative, you will travel through the peaceful countryside toward Arusha, a vibrant city resting beneath the slopes of Mount Meru.

The wildlife experience begins in Arusha National Park, a compact yet remarkably diverse protected area known for Mount Meru, the Momella Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, lush forests and large populations of giraffes, buffaloes and monkeys. Its changing landscapes make it an excellent introduction to a Tanzania wildlife safari.

Your journey then continues to Tarangire National Park, a beautiful wilderness covering approximately 2,850 square kilometres. Tarangire is famous for its ancient baobab trees, open savannah, seasonal swamps and impressive elephant populations. The Tarangire River attracts wildlife from the surrounding ecosystem, creating memorable game viewing opportunities, particularly during the dry season.

The safari reaches its grandest moment inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a protected landscape covering approximately 8,292 square kilometres. You will descend into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, whose wildlife rich floor covers approximately 260 square kilometres. Surrounded by towering crater walls, this natural sanctuary supports lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos and, with good fortune, the endangered black rhinoceros.

Day To day

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

Your Tanzania adventure begins when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a friendly representative from Woodland Trek & Safaris will welcome you and assist with your luggage. After a short safari briefing, you will begin your private transfer to your hotel in Arusha.

The airport is situated approximately 50 to 55 kilometres from central Arusha, and the journey normally takes around one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic and the location of your accommodation. Along the way, you will pass small towns, farms, coffee plantations and open countryside framed by Mount Meru and, when the sky is clear, distant views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After checking into your hotel, you may relax in the gardens, enjoy a refreshing meal or recover from your international journey. Your guide will explain the following day’s schedule and provide useful information about wildlife viewing, safari safety and the destinations ahead.

Day 2

Arusha National Park

After breakfast, your guide will collect you from your hotel for the drive to Arusha National Park, situated approximately 30 to 40 kilometres from Arusha. The transfer generally takes around 45 minutes to one hour, making the park one of the most accessible safari destinations in northern Tanzania.

Covering approximately 552 square kilometres, Arusha National Park contains an impressive variety of habitats. Within a relatively small area, you can experience montane forests, open grasslands, volcanic landscapes, crater viewpoints and the peaceful Momella Lakes.

Your game drive begins through forested areas where blue monkeys and black and white colobus monkeys may be seen moving through the trees. As the landscape opens, you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, bushbucks, waterbucks and several antelope species.

The park is dominated by Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second highest mountain. Its forested slopes create a dramatic background for wildlife photography. You will also explore the Momella Lakes, whose changing mineral content creates different colours across the water. These lakes attract water birds and may occasionally host flamingos.

Another important feature is Ngurdoto Crater, a volcanic caldera surrounded by forest. Wildlife often gathers on the crater floor, although visitors normally observe it from designated viewpoints along the rim.

After your game drive and picnic lunch, you will return to Arusha for dinner and overnight.

Day 3

Tarangire National Park

After an early breakfast, you will leave Arusha and travel southwest toward Tarangire National Park. The park is approximately 120 kilometres from Arusha, and the journey usually takes around two to three hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops along the way.

Tarangire National Park covers approximately 2,850 square kilometres and protects a beautiful mixture of grasslands, seasonal wetlands, river valleys and baobab woodlands. Its name comes from the Tarangire River, which flows through the park and provides an essential water source for wildlife.

During your game drive, you will search for elephants moving beneath giant baobab trees, giraffes feeding among acacias and herds of zebras, wildebeests, impalas and buffaloes crossing the plains. Predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs may also be encountered, although sightings depend on their natural movements.

Tarangire is particularly celebrated for its elephants. Herds may gather near the river, dig for water in sandy areas or guide their young through the woodland. The combination of elephants and ancient baobab trees creates some of the most recognisable safari scenes in Tanzania.

The park also offers rewarding birdwatching, with numerous woodland, wetland and savannah species. You will enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing your afternoon game drive.

Later, you will leave the park and travel to your selected lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, you will travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing through the green highlands of northern Tanzania. Depending on the location of your lodge, the journey may cover approximately 60 to 150 kilometres and take between one and three hours.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers approximately 8,292 square kilometres and contains volcanic highlands, forests, open plains, archaeological sites and traditional pastoral communities. Its most famous feature is the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, one of the largest intact volcanic calderas in the world.

From the crater rim, you will pause to admire the vast floor below before descending approximately 600 metres along a winding road. The crater floor covers roughly 260 square kilometres and contains grasslands, freshwater pools, marshes, forests and seasonal lakes.

Your game drive will take you through areas such as the Lerai Forest, where elephants may be encountered, and the open plains where wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes and gazelles graze. Lions are frequently observed resting on the grasslands or following the movements of prey.

You may also visit the hippo pool, where large pods of hippos rest in the water. The crater is one of Tanzania’s important habitats for the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings are never guaranteed.

A picnic lunch will be served at a designated site surrounded by the dramatic crater scenery. After lunch, you will continue exploring before ascending the crater wall and travelling to your lodge for your final safari evening.

Day 5

Departure

After breakfast, you will begin your journey back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport. From the Karatu or Ngorongoro area, the distance to the airport is generally around 200 to 230 kilometres, and the drive normally takes approximately four to five hours, depending on traffic and planned stops.

The return journey offers one final opportunity to admire Tanzania’s countryside, small towns, farms and highland scenery. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop in Arusha for lunch, souvenir shopping or a brief city experience.

Your guide will ensure that you arrive at the airport with sufficient time for check in and departure procedures. As your safari comes to an end, you will leave Tanzania carrying memories of misty forests, ancient baobabs, wandering elephants and the magnificent walls of Ngorongoro Crater.
